In
preparation for the Inn's 100th anniversary, owners Susan and Allen
Benas began a major renovation program to return the atmosphere at the
Inn to that of the late 1800's when it opened. As the Inn entered its
second century of
serving 1000 Island visitors in 1998, it offered a full array of large
rooms
that recall those days, yet keeping in tune with the demands of today's
travelers.
This was no
small effort. Your hosts spent months studying historic small hotels
across the nation, to bring back the ambience of a 1887 built hotel,
while retaining all the modern comforts. For couples, the double beds
of the
late 1800's, for example, gave way to the preferable king size beds of
today.
Some of the rooms even feature brass beds and claw footed bathtubs,
very
much in keeping with the past. For groups or single travelers, many
rooms
also offer individual double or twin size beds.
In keeping
with the period, the Inn's 2nd and 3rd floors feature new interior
walls with wainscoting, painted in two tones. Our decorators also came
up with an array of timely color schemes for the restoration. Rooms
also feature wainscoted walls, each room with its own blending tones of
blues, yellows, teals and burgundys. Color coordinated deep pile
carpets, quilted bed spreads, and hand-crafted wall appointments by
local artisans complete the authentic 1800's decor. The renovations
were performed by one of the area's most recognized and qualified
contractors. That insured quality. Interior design was provided by, as
Allen recalls, "Money to Susan, Inc."
As travelers
expect from historic facilities today the total restoration project,
that began in 1994 and continued until 1999, is a continuing project
with all rooms scheduled for major renovation after every 925 occupancy
nights, to insure customer satisfaction.
Most rooms at
the Inn afford a view of the St. Lawrence River, just across the
street. All rooms provide the modern luxuries of color-cable TV and
full private baths, yet are furnished and decorated to reflect the
period of the late 1800's, complete with many antique furnishings.
Rooms also have multi-speed ceiling fans and blankets for taking
advantage of the cool summer evening breezes off the river.
For many
guests, staying at the Thousand Islands Inn was their first experience
in a historic small hotel. The many 'Thank You' letters Susan and Allen
receive every year, and of course the many return visits, certainly
indicate their approval. Small hotels are not to be confused with
either B&B's or modern motor inns. Unlike B&B's, the Inn's
guests enjoy total privacy in their own rooms. And unlike modern motor
inns or hotels, as Susan is quick to point out, "Our guests are not
just numbers."
We are sure
you will agree...there is something about the Inn that breaks down
formality - quickly. Perhaps it is partly because Susan and Allen
really enjoy their guests!
