In celebrating the Great Lakes
In Clayton-1000 Islands
Two U.S. Navy ships, the mine sweeper and counter measurers ship USS Kingfisher and coastal surveillance ship USS Sentry were centerpieces of Clayton's Millennium Celebration of America from July 2nd through 6th in year 2000. These ships were tentatively scheduled to return to Clayton on July 5th, 2002 to relive a good portion of that celebration. Unfortunately the events of 9/11 demanded their active duty presence elsewhere in the country and the 2002 Great Lakes Cruise was cancelled.
The USS Sentry and USS Kingfisher moored side by side at Frink Pier in
Clayton,
just across the street from the Thousand Islands Inn, during their year
2000 Great Lakes Cruise.
This event brings Navy ships to Clayton every two years during the Independence
Day celebration.
On their year 2000 Great Lakes Cruise, these two ships
hosted over 12,000 visitors during their four day visit to Clayton,
more visitors than at any other single port of call including the cities
of Detroit and Chicago!
